Mokolodi Nature reserve is located just outside gabs and it a must see if you are planning on being in the area for some time. Unlike Northern Botswana Mokolodi is a home for injured and orphaned wildlife, it functions more like a zoo than a game reserve.
So why did I go to a Zoo with all this wild life in the North. Well, for years as a child my mother could not figure out why I continued to wet the bed. Little did she know I had myself convinced there were WILD CHEETAH's living under my bed between sunset and sunrise ( so much for educational television). This is why I traveled to Mokolodi, to pet Duma and Letotse. (Orphaned Cheetah's).
Duma and Letotse were orphaned when there mother was shot by a farmer (common practice to protect livestock). They were found by a bushman, nursed and brought to Mokolodi. For 220 Pula you can get a 2hrs game drive and pet the cheetah's. It is a must do. They are far from the wild aggressive Cheetah's that lived under my bed.... Honestly, they were big sucks. A neck massage went a long way with the big cats(just like petting my dogs).
We started with a game drive through the reserve early in the morning. Along the way we spotted a family of Giraffes( see the baby nursing photo), Warthogs, Elephants, antelopes and Cheetah's. If you are not interested in visiting the Cheetah's you can do a self game drive for 45pula, camp (not cheap), or just visit for dinner (good food ).
