I am always game for a road trip, especially if it envolves a game drive and taking photos. We left for Ghanzi at 5am Sunday morning. The drive can be done in 2hrs from Kang, but not this morning. Between the Goats, Cattle and Donkey traffic jams it took almost 3hrs to arrive into Town. (Stopping to take photos of Eagles does not help either).

Our first stop was Kanana Game Lodge. The idea was to arrive early enough to see game and then get a bite to eat at the lodge. Easier said than done. The best way to get there is to follow the signs. However, it is a long slow ride. It took around 45 mins of back road driving to get there. But very worth the drive, it is a beautiful lodge located right on a waterhole. (Probable ever nicer if there was some game). The place was completely empty, No game, no people and looking like there is no food. The only noise in the room was my stomach growling at me. Luckily there was a bowl full of cookies. Not exactly the breakfast of champions, but it will do. I quickly stuffed my face before we went searching for the owners. Normally you have to pay for a game drive, but not today. The Family was busy entertaining some friends so we got free range of the Reserve. Not too bad. Over the next few hours I was able to see Kudus and lots of droppings. On the way out of the Lodge (to get some food) we spotted a Kori Bustard crossing the road. It is the largest flying Bird in the world and stands about 4 feet tall. You could actually hear the wind moving under its wings as it took off. What a sight to see.

The town is larger than Kang and has many comforts that are not available in a small village. I almost started crying when I saw red tomatoes, Pepsi, Oreo Cookies and Fresh Fruit. I had no idea that one could get that excited over a grocery store. After stuffing our faces and buying everything in Grocery store it was time to do another Game drive and eat dinner.

The other reason why we started this road trip was for the BEST ribs in Botswana. So, off to the Thakadu Camp. For one reason or another no one wanted to give us a game drive on Sunday. So, once again we got free range of another Camp in Ghanzi. This time I spent the trip riding on top of the Landover (The only way to do it as far as I am concerned). What a blast! I could not even stop smiling long enough to take a photo. This time I was able to see many YellowBilled HornBills, Ostriches, and a herd of Kudus. I would recommend this Camp any day. It has the best menu I have seen since I came to Botswana. You could get a wide variety of cheap delicious food.

Although the game is few and far between this time of year the day trip was still a blast. I managed to walk away covered in dirt with a big smile on my face. To top it off I even managed to get the perfect Christmas Gift for my MOM (and I am dieing to tell you)

See you soon

Melissa
