Friday school finished at 12pm which was FANTASTIC! Plus the fact that I didn;t have to teach. We had from time (as in liek tutor groups) all morning where they watched movies and did secret santa type things and then whole school assembly. Being casual day as well as the last day of school meant that there was a general air of pandemonium in the air. After dismissal we all headed down to the local pub which is conveniently located across the road from the train station. I had my HUGE bag with me ready to go straight from the pub to the airport and had sruggled on public transport the whole way to school. I couldn't fit through the beep beep things and kept getting stuck all over the place... not so fun. After lunch at the pub and severa ciders I headed fro Harthrow. I fell asleep several times on the tube jolting awake several times in a panic not quite sure where I was or what desination I was aiming for. At 9pm I finally arrived in Malmo is southern Sweden. I was too late for the last train to Karlskrona but Linn picked me up from the station and I spent the night at her place. On my way outof the station I got stuck in the automatic rotating door and the whole door stopped with lotsof people inside it all looking at me accusingly. Unable to move somene had to come from behing and push my bag in order to free it.
I took the train the next day arriving in the early afternoon. I went out with Jacqui and Rebecca that night to the 'new years review'. This is a locally produced show incorporating song and dance and a series of comedy sketches. They basically make fun of local characters and news events that have occurred during the year. Not being a local I didn't really 'get it' but it was still entertaining. My mum and Simon who had been travelling in Europe for the past 2 and a half weeks arrived by train at 10.30pm so we picked them up before heading home. Sunday we spent catching up and doing some Christmas shopping. Sunday evening my sister arrived from Toronto. The next couple of days I spent with various family members. We went up to my dads place to find a Christmas tree. We walked around in the forest for what seemed hours before settling on one, my nanna didn't make things easier by insisting that the tree HAD to be at least 3 metres tall!! We finally got the damn thing home and decorated it. Christmas Eve we spent at Helen's my dad's sister which was nice. Lots of littel kiddies running around which is a change from my last Christmas'. Lots of food! Traditional Swedish smorgasbord with lots of conserves and pickled herring, various cabbage dishes, liverwurst, sausage, meatballs etc. The marathon lunch followed by present giving, glogg (mulled wine) and 'rice alla malta' (rice pudding mixed with whipped cream, vanilla and spices).
Christmas day at my mum's sister Jacquis saw just as much food consumed but a lot more alcohol. After all the traditional Christmas stuff we turned to drinking games which saw the evening disappear quite fast.
Boxing day I felt quite fragile. It had been cold but no substantial snow had fallen which was a shame. We went out for a walk in the morning and lay around eating left over christmas food before some one suggested we should head into town to the after Christmas sales.
