From Garmish-Partenkirken we were an hour and a half from Munich. Catching the train at 9am on a Saturday morning was probably a mistake as it was packed!!! Hoards of people all in their traditional costumes, leiderhosen and German dresses. We arrived at an overcrowded train station and put our bags into lockers and blindly followed the crowd to Oktoberfest. I wasn't expecting it to be as big as it was with rides and the whole carnival type thing like the show.

We looked at the lines for the beer tents and trying to get in seemed futile. We joined one that was not so long.. but we had a beer to keep us going. Two hours later we were still in the line which no longer resembled a line at all, the litre of beer was long gone, we had six American friends who were studying in Berlin, an older Canadian man had scared the shit out of me with his 'rattle snake eggs' a big stinky German guy had tried to bully his way in but had got yelled at by our Dutch friends and then punched in the head by the Austrian guy. Dave finally got in but I was left outside for ages as a German lady fainted in the doorway. When we finally got in we had a bit of a reunion with all the people we had met in the line and then day really began. We managed to get onto a table which we then got kicked off of, got another table, got kicked off an hour later and so it went all day long inbetween the beer drinking and sausage eating. There was a band playing in the middle and standard behaviour is to stand on the benches of the table and sing/yell along to the music stein in hand. Oktoberfest beer is apparently only made for the festival and is 10% alcohol... a fact I did not realize until the day after... ouch
