Where I stayed
In the evening we walked from our hotel down the street to what said beer garden
. We walked inside and froze by the door, it was like walking in to another world in another time. A small front bar so thick with smoke we could barely see anything and inside sat around 30 middle aged German men wearing hats with feathers and woolen vests. ' I don't think we're supposed to be here' I whispered to Dave as we were approached by the barman. Can we eat here we asked and were seated in a corner at a table across from two locals. It seemed offensive not to order beer so we did.. along with some goulash soup and schnitzel. We had an awesome meal and some sort of hilarious dialogue with the men at our table. As we left the bar man took down a big ceramic beer glass off his wall and offered it to us as a souvenir.
Our task.. to get closer to Munich.. our town of choice was Garmish-Partenkirchen... chosen not only for it's terrific name... well mainly for its name but also being a town of reasonable size offering decent accommodation. This town is one of, if not the biggest ski resort destinations in Germany, luckily we were there in between seasons so we got a decent room in a place called the sunshine apartments! Having missed out on a hiking opportunity in Austria we thought we would go up one of the ski lifts up to the snow and have a walk around, get some views... Luck was against us and the lady selling tickets showed us her screen which showed a blizzard on top of the mountains. We opted to stay at ground level and just went for a walk up to the start of another ski lift called the wankbahn where we at least got some views of the city and surrounding mountains.
