Back in Athens we missed our train to Meteora by about... 30 seconds! So to plan B, an overnight bus to Corfu on the most uncomfortable bus I have ever been on, and I have been on a lot of buses in a lot of dodgy countries!! We boarded the ferry at Igoumentisa at 4.30am and crashed out only to be rudely awoken at 6 by an announcement of our arrival. After spending the best part of the morning at the hospital Dave had recovered his hearing which came as a great relief to both of us. It did take me a while to get used to the fact that I no longer needed to shout at him to be heard!

We have found a nice place to stay in a place called Benitsa, 12 kms south of Corfu town. It's much quieter here than in the town although very touristy but you get that.. The beaches are mainly pebbles but the water is amazingly clear and refreshing. Surprisingly is it quite a bit warmer here than Naxos where there was a constant breeze blowing. Corfu seems like a really nice place, really pretty.. it is unfortunate that pretty much the entire coastline has been developed for tourism.

We went back in to check out Corfu town which is quite a busy place, lots of people, cars and shops. Got the standard take away yiros, available from pretty much everywhere, pita bread with yiros meat fries a token tomato and garlic sauce dripping in fat but very very tasty. We went into the fort down by the dock which was a pretty amazing, absolutely huge stone structure with tunnels and winding staircases and a spectacular view from the top. We also visited the church of Saint Spiridon the islands patron saint.

Behind the town of hotels and restaurants that line the streets is the view of some spectacular mountains. We got up early to beat the heat and went on a hike lovely little tails through the mountain, lots of vegetation unlike Naxos and some great views. We spent an afternoon on the beach swimming and relaxing. The water was so nice I could have stayed in all day. I had the brilliant idea of buying a couple of li-los to play on which we could then take on our overnight ferry ride that we would be spending on deck...
