Where I stayed
I zoomed in past the mat of vegetation and trees to the bluffs on the main river channel. We turned left there and were right outside the next lock. The lock master was waiting for us when we arrived and we went right through.
Continuing on downriver we passed some bald eagles in the trees. Looked like the two together was an adult and juvenile
If we had been delayed at the lock we would have not been able to make it to our next marina at Columbus Ms. I took some video showing what we saw on the chart for the Bashi creek anchorage and what we actually saw when we passed it.
Along the way we passed some interesting "yard art" on shore: A phone booth and a really nice totem pole and the man we met back at Midway who is cruising down the Tenn-Tom in a kayak
We arrived at Columbus marina about 2:45 and they just let us overnight at the fuel dock since we were leaving right away in the morning.
As we were registering a couple walked in the door behind us and we looked at each other in instant recognition. It was Bob and Kathy Griffith who own 101 boat dock and marina on Lake Norfork in Arkansas. I traded with these folks in the 70's and 80's when I was living in Missouri. What a coincidence!! They had retired and bought a Trawler and had been traveling for a few years already. They had been bringing their boat back upriver to wait out hurricane season for several years and were on their way south again
We had some really nice porterhouse steaks for dinner and as we were grilling them outside the kayaker pulled in. He said he has been camping on the river for 8 days and was going to go into town to a motel for the night. We were going to use the marina courtesy car to restock groceries and volunteered to drop him off. We had some steak left over and had him on board for a treat. He is a river guide on the Colorado river and kayaks other rivers on his time off. And we thought we were adventurous.
While we were eating 2 guys walked over to visit from another boat who had left their boat for awhile and returned to continue on south. They are on a 42' Grand Banks trawler and were going to leave about 10 am the next morning with the same destination as us, Pirates Cove marina. Looks like we are going to have new buddy boaters again.
The next chapter will be from here at Columbus marina to Pirates cove.
