It seems that every eating establishment, grocery store and some thrift stores offer a Senior discount. You see, during the Winter months here in Myrtle Beach, things are very slow. Gone are the tens of thousands of visitors swarming to the beach, spending money like water. Eating, drinking and shopping like the world was coming to an end, these folks are the backbone of the areas economy. With them gone, things are SLOW. So slow in fact that some businesses shut down over the Winter. Enter the Seniors.
Restaurants have realized that the Senior population increases over the Winter months. Most are of modest to great wealth. The Seniors wallets are full but have a tight locking system on them. Hence, the discounts. Nothing gets these folks to open the vaults like a Senior discount. It does not matter what it is, buy 1 get 1, 30% off, early bird specials, whatever, as long as it says Senior discount.
It did not take me long to realize that I needed to get in on this racket. Now, I have an AARP card that was sent to me when I turned 50 in 2010. I never pulled it out or even thought about it's benefits. Well slap me in the head and hose me down. What was I thinking? This stupid card thing saves me money down here. I will take a Senior discount on anything, I'm not proud or embarrassed at all. Some folks have told me that they would never ask for a discount because they don't want to be called a Senior. My answer to that is BULLS_IT! I don't care if I get 5 cents
off something, I got this card thing so give me the discount, if you don't want yours, give it to me.
Some places have tried to be slick and up the age for the discount. They don't realize that I'm like a Marine, I adapt - adjust to the situation! You want me to be 60, no problem. I grew up as a problem child. You don't think I've forgotten how to produce a fake ID? Paalleeese!! I have ID for any age you want my friend. I can be 70 if need be. I have discharge papers from every military branch during every major conflict dating back to WWII. I can produce a photo ID of me at any age also. Do you know you can morf yourself on the Internet and print the picture? There is no stopping me. I'm out of control!
Now here is a funny thing. If you go to a place and they offer a discount, the younger folks working could care less. They offer it without even asking. Sometimes more then expected. They will discount everything. Groceries, wine, beer, gas, anything. If you get a Senior that happens to be working, watch out. They treat this discount privilege like it was the eleventh commandment. My God, are you kidding me? They will card you, Ask for the last 4 of you SS number, 2 picture ID's, and last years Tax return! Give me a break. Is this discount so very special to you. Do you feel like I am taking money from you? You are giving us Seniors a bad name. Snap out of it, every dog needs a little bone now and then. Times are tough. The economy stinks. Let me get my discount in peace.
Before buying our home, Gail and I went and looked at homes in an age restricted community. After the usual welcomes were over, we were informed that we "are not old enough" to live in this community and escorted off the property. Being the type of guy I am, I will visit there again. This time with all my ID in hand. Now who's not old enough wise guy.
With all this said, I have just a few words left to say to everyone. Stand tall. Get your discounts with pride. Ask for them with your head held high. We all have worked hard to achive this status in life. Always remember that you are not old when you are classified a Senior. There was a time many years ago when we were full of life, vigor and dreams. Being called a Senior then was great. Remember high school? Fake ID's then and now. Who knew?
