Bosnia and Sarajevo in particular is probably my favorite place so far. The people are great and it's hard to grasp how they can be so welcoming. My cab driver asked me to tell my friends back home to come visit Sarajevo.
The first Olympics that I remember watching was the 1984 Winter games from Sarajevo. In late high school and early college I remember a bit about the war going on there. It wasn't until the week leading up to my visit that I made an attempt to learn more about it. In a nutshell, Sarajevo was under siege by Serbian forces from 1992 until 1995. Arriving on the bus the first thing I noticed was all the bullet and mortar damage to the many housing complexes. For three years the UN watched and did nothing but prevent the Bosnian Muslims from being able to fight back. Much of the Olympic grounds are now cemeteries full of those killed in those three years. Most of the graves I saw were people my age.
