Where I stayed

Flag of Serbia  ,

I had every intention of going to Albania from Skopje. I had a bus ticket and lodging reservations and had heard nothing but great things about the people and the food and the natural beauty. However, Albania just opened itself to the world in the past 15 years or so and their infrastructure shows it. They have daily power and water outages, undrinkable water, and difficult travel due to poor roads. For the few days I planned to stay there it wasn't worth the amount of time I would have to dedicate to finding taxis and bus schedules and would have spent the majority of my time getting in and out of the country. At the last second I decided to eat the cost of my bus ticket and go to Belgrade, Serbia instead.

I knew nothing about Belgrade or Serbia when I arrived. I've learned it was the most populated and more prosperous republic in former Yugoslavia as well as the center of power and influence. It definitely shows in that it feels and looks much more like Western Europe than I would have expected. It doesn't hurt that the weather here is noticeably cooler than I have experienced in weeks.
I knew that NATO bombed Belgrade in 1999 but didn't see any evidence walking around. I was a bit shocked to stumble upon it relatively close to the hostel. They looked like office buildings but were military headquarters. After talking with some of the hostel staff, it's really hard to believe the things that happened in this city and country just 11 years ago. Air raids and riots daily seem impossible based on the atmosphere today. It makes me wonder if things like this are possible in the US with how stupid people get over political differences. They never thought it would happen here either.

Hey Dustin.
