Sofia was really just a stopover on my way West towards Macedonia. Travel is so significantly slower that you really cant make it past the next major city for the most part. The bus ride into town from Veliko Tarnovo was very scenic as we made our way over the Stara Planina mountains, which cross from West to East in Central Bulgaria.

If you just found yourself in Sofia, you'd probably find it a bit rough or all out scary. I don't even know anymore because you just get used to a different standard of things and as you travel East and South it's a gradual change. I often wonder what someone would think if they came straight from home and we were to arrive in a place like Sofia.

I'd read about the differences between travel and vacation but now I know first hand. Travel is not a vacation. It's pretty much constant research, planning, walking, sweating, searching for this or that. I love it. Good vacation spots are terrible places to travel in my opinion. They are crowded, expensive, fake, and full of people from all over the place who are generally in a bad mood.

Arriving in Sofia I wondered about as usual, found a slice of questionable pizza and followed the sound of music to a nice park where there was a free heavy metal concert. I'm assuming these were local up and coming (or not) bands. I watched several  bands for hours as they played Guns n Roses, Metallica, Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Iron Maiden songs. Sitting in the park with the head banging teens, gypsies, and confused older generation was one of the more memorable events of my trip.

I met a guy from California who was in Bulgaria for two years with the Peace Corp starting a youth center. It's basically sink or swim as he was thrown into a mountain village near the border of Greece and having to learn a new language written in a different alphabet.
