Flag of Austria  , Austrian Alps,
Friday, July 23, 2010

As soon as you get to Austria, everything seems to change quickly. Everything is crisp, and new, and modern, and clean. They even landscape and mulch along the sides of the train tracks. I really didn't have any preconceptions about Austria and it was a nice surprise.

Innsbruck is surrounded on all sides by steep mountains. All of those mountain tops are accessible by cable car or gondola or terrifying rickety old chair lift. I took advantage of this to go on a hike along the ridge from one ski area to another.

I shared a room with an Estonian and two Swedes. One thing I found interesting is that they automatically speak English to each other, it’s the common language of young Northern and Eastern Europeans. They have no sense of any accents when they hear English. They don’t know listening to me if I am a natural English speaker or if it is my second or third language. I was asked by the Swedes if I was also Estonian and by the Estonian if I was also a Swede. Since Austria pretty much everyone speaks English. It’s a little too easy.
