We headed on to Kings Canyon Resort, not a bad place to stay with a beautiful view out over the ranges. Quite nice but VERY expensive once again at what seems to be the standard out here, $41 night. There are two lovely walks in and around the canyon here. As it was about 2pm and 31°, we decided on the Kings Creek Walk, along the canyon floor. Although it was quite hot, we did the 2km return walk, meandering along a dry Kings Creek, ending at a viewing platform where you can see the stunning sheer canyon walls going straight up where we will be walking along the ridge of tomorrow
Well it's Billy’s birthday today 9th April, and also our lovely friend Christine! Many Happies to you both! We woke, opened the curtains to look at the sunrise and bugger me dead there was a dingo just outside the van window sniffing around! Wow! They told us at the park that they wander around and not to feed them, but we really didn't expect to see one! He was so skinny and scrawny looking.
We packed our backpack and headed back to King’s Canyon to do the 6km Kings Canyon Rim Trek. It apparently takes 3-4 hours to traverse
After we reached the top of the initial tough part of the climb, a whole world of spectacular beauty was opened up to us. What great energy these stone domes have! They are kind of like gigantic droppings! It is like being on another planet! The walk encompasses the rim of the canyon and meanders through magnificent domes, offers great viewing positions of the amazing, steep, sheer canyon walls down to the canyon floor below, not to mention spectacular colour and plant and birdlife. I walked out to a phenomenal viewing spot, where there was a bridge out to a dome viewing spot – no hand railings or fences here, and when I climbed to the top of the dome felt like I was on top of the world. It truly was very special. Billy missed this one as it was way too close to the edges!
We trekked down to another section to this gorgeous Garden of Eden, a true paradise in this barren hot landscape, with lush, huge cycads and gum trees
We met a guy and his dad from Byron Bay this arvo in the pool and went over to the Bistro here at the resort with them for dinner and Billy’s Birthday Bash. There was entertainment there and once informed that it was Bill’s birthday, came and sang to him and got both him and myself up for a couple of their skits! Billy took the show away with his rendition of A Frog Went Walking on a Summer’s Day Ah-Hum! (there is a video of him singing at the end of the photos) It was a cack, or should I say croak! It was a BIG night and we had a ball! Off to Alice Springs next to stock up then out to the Macdonnell Ranges for a look… should be good.
