Arequipa, a 5 hour bus from Puno which was the coldest place I have been so far!
Towering over the hot, dry dusty town of Arequipa is Volcan Misti, some 6000 metres high. It dominates the landscape and was the resting place of Juanita, an Incan child, sacrificed by the Incas many years ago to plead the Volcano to stop destroying their city which was continually devastated by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Unfortunately the sacrifice didn't work, so they tried it another 5 times.
5 Incan children have recently been discovered, high on the peak of the volcano. All buried with pottery and gold figurines. Only 2 years ago there was an earthquake, destroying much of the city. Maybe they need another sacrifice! I know a few worthy Bolivians that nobody would miss.
Off to ICA, right now, chau chau... more soon...
