Spider!
That's a Louise Bourgeoise! I love those spiders. They play on all of our fears and are so dark and creepy...and yet...
I read somewhere that when she was a girl, the artist's mother restored tapestries...she was a weaver, like a spider. And the artist's father was a philanderer who treated his wife like dirt...or, like a spider. But of course the artist remained close to her mother, who was giving and maternal to the young girl despite how much she suffered...maternal, like a spider is for her young.
After reading this, standing underneath one of those massive spider sculptures just seems different. It's no longer nasty and frightening; you feel protected by the legs that hold you in, and you feel a pity for this creature that so many people despise.
I think that was part of the artist's plan -- to play with our preconceptions, and also to do homage to her mother. So in that sense, since there's an intellectual component, it's not just an interesting physical sculpture, it's an interesting piece of concept art, as well...
Nice to see one in Korea!!
