We finally have some time to write our first blog entry. It’s been three weeks of unemployment, but with a long to-do list. Organizing this, selling that, applying for visas, buying last-minute items for the trip, vaccines, medical check-ups, buying airplane tickets, saying good-bye to family and friends… anyway, lots of tension, but above all else, lots of excitement!

I know most of you reading this blog are family and friends, but I hope at some point this reaches others interested in travel, whether you’re looking for inspiration, suggestions or a quick break from “reality.” So here goes a small intro for those of you who haven’t met us.

We’re Angie and Will, and from now on you may call us Speedy González and Tortuguita, in that order. We’re a Colombian couple, living in the United States, that was bitten by the travel bug some time ago and still present “symptoms.” Based on other traveler’s stories, this sickness affects people of all ages regardless of social or economic status, marital status, or number of offspring. The disease causes a craze for exploring the world, understanding foreign cultures, and learning new languages. In this case, both patients crave eating strange things, and getting lost while finding themselves. There is a high chance of becoming tolerant towards other cultures while understanding one’s own. It is believed this is a highly contagious illness, therefore it is highly recommended to spend plenty of time with family and friends. For the time being, the cure is unknown. However, experts claim that by trying different means of transportation, taking in high dosages of landscapes and speaking with friendly strangers at least three times per day brings relief to most patients.

Given these symptoms, the following is the recovery strategy. To travel economically and indefinitely to as many places as possible. To try travelling slowly because one learns more and spends less. To do more and “see” less. To be open to possibilities, even if that means returning sooner than anticipated. Anything goes, so the important thing is getting started and living our life and dreams now, today!

If we are cleared for departure, we take off this coming Monday (April 23, 2012) driving a Volkswagen that has started showing its age under a worn green coat of paint and making strange sounds. We hope it takes us to Georgia and later to Florida so we can say goodbye to family and friends. We’ll be on the interstate for over 20 hours, so we’re really hoping our lemon can hold on. We fly to Bogotá, Colombia from Orlando, FL. We'll spend a few days in our home country’s capital and then on to “heaven’s branch office” (as Cali is known to Colombians) for a few months. Later on...Shanghai!

Going by the idea that “the world is a book, and those who don’t travel only read a page,” we dream of reading the entire book. However, we understand that our mortal existence isn’t enough, so we’d like to read at least a whole chapter.

We hope you leave comments about what you’d like to know (and what you wouldn’t) and that you continue visiting our new virtual home to keep in touch.
