Today Naoto joined us for a day in Tokyo and showed us Asakusa and Akihabara Electric City.

We didn't know what to expect so I was surprised when we arrived at a temple gate in Asakusa. Once through the gate there was a narrow street of stores both sides all the way to the Sensoji Temple at the other end. We worked our way through the throng of people including lots and lots of school children who were apparently on school excursions from other areas of Japan. The foods we tasted all seemed to have some from of soybean or rice if not both but were all very nice even though some of the soybean were quite sweet.

At the end of this street was a  Buddhist temple where a ceremony of some sort  was in progress.  Around the temple there were also booths at which people paid to shake a tin to get a number and then they select the box/ drawer  with that number. In there is  a piece of paper which tells their fortune. Even Rina had a go - had to laugh  because it covered all bases. All this fortune money was going towards renovations on the temple which we didn't get to see because it was all covered.

We wandered the streets guided by Naoto who must have known where he was going because he led us to a street of restaurants where we had lunch. Businessmen frequent these restaurants so we selected one by the number of patrons and chose a selection of Japanese foods some of which  we hadn't tried before . All very nice.

From here we caught the train again to Akihabara. This place has all the electric and electronic gear you would ever want. Shop after shop , some of them full of all the animated games that are out and one store by the name of Akihabara had 7 floors of every imaginable device and the 8th floor was a huge bookstore plus  vast range of stationery. We also went to a store that sells  Cosplay and housed the theatre for AKB48,  a pop group of Japanese girls,  over which the Japanese  boys are absolutely crazy.

It was a great day even though it was a bit on the chilly especially for Rina as she had expected it to be warm like yesterday. It was also a great day to see Naoto so relaxed on his day off work.

Hi Arja,
Your fantastic blog is bringing back great memories of our own trip to Japan. I think travel writing is something you should consider for the future....
Sherry & Doc Kaurila are flying out today(Sat 5th) for Helsinki. They will spend their time at Turku and Rauma (where Doc's people are from). The chance that you will run into them in Finland is remote, but strange things happen on overseas trips!
Thinking of you & watching from my office. Enjoy!
