By the time we reached this point in the trip, the road conditions in Mexico had taken their toll on the vehicles and our bodies. It was late in the evening and we were tired. However, we still had a great distance to cover to get to the border. At this point, the hitch between the bus and the Toyota had been destroyed. The only thing holding it anymore were a few chains we had along with us. The straps securing the van had all snapped at least once.
We neared the end of the larger highway and this was the point when we would travel cross country on smaller roads through the small pueblos. There would be many speed bumps or "topes" and much worse road conditions. It was raining off and on by now and I had no windshield wipers. I had some Rain-X on the windshield but driving slow and in the mist often didn't help a bit.
Marcelo hoped to make it as far as Matias Romero where the border would be in stiking distance the next day.
