Well the first thing I learned was that the 'detailed' map i have of the Great River Road is not very detailed. It only shows major roads but not the roads that connect them together. I did not get lost but I went the wrong way a couple of times and had to use my GPS to get me back on track. The route is well signed except in a few places and of course I found those places.
The route follows the river and is very twist not an A to B Interstate highway and it took me a 1/2 day to get used to the slower pace.
Stopping off in Bemindji I was surprised to find Steam Punk style sculptures. I originally went there to shot the Paul Bunyan and Babe statues. I also got a couple of fabulous shots of a bird using telephoto.
The Mississippi river grows wide over a shot distance, you can see from my shots today comparing it with yesterdays Headwaters shot
About 1/2 into the day following the signs faithfully I turned onto a dirt road! and there was a second sign just down the way as if to say yes this is the way! Well it was a true washboad road and I am glad I had my front suspension upgraded this year! The road went on and on. Stright sections, S curves and bends all while following the river. What seemed like a days ride I saw a Stop Sign ahead with a tarmac road...Joy! I turned onto the tarmac road then almost immediately turn back onto the dirt road again! This time I took a corner a little too fast and the washboads were bouncing me off the road! With a little patience I got to the apex of the corner then gunned it! and came out OK. The final 25 kms of the journey was via 4 lane highway sigh... Checked into the motel then next door for Mexican food. My lips have stopped burning now from that almost raw Jalapeno peppers - Yum!
