Today I went to the main Zion National Park. Park access is either walking, bicycling or taking the shuttle. The shuttle was included with the cost of admission which for a motorcycle is the same as a bicycle J The cost for a car was $24 while the motorcycle cost me $12.
I was not ready for all of the greenery in the canyon fed by a river that was about 3 meters across. I even saw 'red' flowers for the first time. There was seven stops on the shuttle run and you could get off and take photo’s or hike the trails that originate from that stop. Of course I went to the park saying that I was not going to do any hiking – guess what? I lied to myself
The last hike was supposed to be wheelchair accessible, ha! That even before I got to the end my feet were killing me! I was ready to quit but I didn’t, and I was glad when I met a woman coming up using one of those wheely walkers. I felt really silly. This final walk was the end of the Zion canyon where the walls grew so narrow that the river covered all of the base in places. Of course there were people who were walking up the river to explore the narrow slot canyons leading off the river. Thank heaven that the ride back to the parking lot took 30 mins and I had a seat.
Riding back to Bryce Canyon where I’ll explore tomorrow I road the Zion – Mt Carmel highway which under normal circumstances is scenic twisting, switchback, hairpin road. It would have been fun but it was under construction…we waited at two point for over 10 mins for traffic to come by as the road became a single lane. Have of the 24 km route, it was basically a dirt road. So, you throw in the up hills and down hills and the 200 – 400 drop-off on my side it was a challenging road to say the least. I did not have too much trouble with my bike but the people that had the Harleys and Honda Goldwings were having problems.
To end it all I could not find a room for the night as I arrived at the town I planned to stop so late due to the ride. I had to go back to the previous town and got the last room – it’s really nice and then I had supper at an American / Mexican restaurant and the food was delicious. The best I’ve has so far.
