Guatemala City gets a bad rap and with good reason too. There is a huge problem with gangs. The city buses and chicken buses are often charged a fee from these gangs and if the driver refuses he is often killed. This is a weekly occurrence and bus drivers are beginning to organize and demand some action from the government. This is NOT what I like about Guatemala City.
What I do like is the Cathedral. This is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. It is more of a museum than cathedral with it´s originally old and beautiful paintings as well as antiqued sculptures and such. It is truly magnificent. I also like that Guatemala City is referred to as Guate. There are buses to almost anywhere you want to go and the passport visa people are quite friendly. In addition there is graffiti throughout reflecting a time of political strife and VIVE CHÉ!!!
And there are the taxis. The first, on a very busy non-stop street, was being pushed by a random man and the cab driver, jumping in and reving up the 5 speeder until we were on our way. The second rushed up to his car telling the sleeping man to get out and me to get in. Oh, I also like my friend , Sarah, who lives there.
If you do go to Guate take a taxi to the Cathedral:)
