I'm tired. I've worked a few twelve hour days and waking up at five AM isn't my idea of fun. I've been working in the buffet picking up dishes and I've been portering.
"What's portering", I asked a few weeks ago.
The response was something like: "oh, you carry bags to rooms, stuff like that."
That sentence actually means that you'll be picking up garbage, crawling into ceilings and sealing holes in the roof, cleaning sludge out of gutters, sanding, sweeping, and whatever else we throw at you. oh yeah, wear some nice clothes when you do that crap too.
If I've done all of that in two days of portering, I'm wondering what else I'll be doing. Portering isn't too bad though. I dislike waiting on tables. Next week apparently I'll be trained as a kitchen hand. Doing dishes and prepping for the cooks will probably beat carrying dishes. I also dropped one on my first day. No real surprise there. oh yeah, picking up dishes also includes getting hit on by old Australian women.
An interesting and completely disconnected thing just popped into my head (because that's how I think). In Queenstown a Scottish woman mistook me for Irish. I figured the Scottish would know better than most other people when it comes to an Irish sounding accent. Then on Monday a woman at work said, "Are you Irish or American?" I guess I just give off those Irish vibes. (insert Irish joke here)
On to some political junk. I read a couple of weeks ago about how Dick Cheney said something like, "If America doesn't make the right choice in November, we'll be facing more attacks" and then clarified this later on. Then the House Speaker, Dennis Hastert said that al Qaeda wants John Kerry to win in November. Should we be arresting Mr. Hastert? Is it good to have someone in the House who is communicating with al Qaeda? Or is he just making this up? hmmm, next thing we'll hear is that the Communists want John Kerry to win. Is this the 1950's? Talk about fear tactics. After Hastert's comments I called the Embassy and had them send me the official request for an absentee ballot. Not that I wasn't going to do it, but I did it as soon as I could.
Also finally saw a credible article on Prescott Bush (George W.'s grandfather) and his business deals with the Nazi Party even after the U.S. entered WWII. Apparently the Bush family is being sued along with the government by a couple of Auschwitz survivors. Bush has already taken a few steps to safeguard the family so I doubt that case will go far. Enough of my political rant. Tomorrow I can use my fishing license! I supposed I'd better get a fishing pole then. Well I'm out for now. I need some sleep.
**edit: I forgot to say something for the zoo folks. I went into work two days ago for breakfast and I met the hostess and as soon as I saw her I thought, "Mary Adams!" She looks a lot like Mary, but not as tall. As I approached her she said, "Hi, I'm Mary". NO WAY!!!!!! haha, so tell Mary that she has a NZ clone.
In a seperate matter, check out www.factcheck.org for some interesting and independent political reading in regards to the upcoming election.
