From Istanbul we traveled via bus to Bursa for a short stop and then to Bergama. The latter boasts several amazing architectural sites, specifically an ancient acropolis as well as an Egyptian temple converted basilica. The weather has been increasingly warmer as we move south, and the natives are more and more surprised to see tourists as we travel farther away from Istanbul. We are almost always welcomed into any community. It seems that the children are the most fascinated by our American-looking group, and love us even more after gifts of gum and candy. The trip has been seamless thus far, stopping next in Selcek to visit the infamous ruins of Ephesus. First discovered by a group of Austrian archeologists, the Greek and Roman city winds through the Turkish countryside and dates as far back as the 4th century B.C. We ventured to Fetiye for a few nights, and we spent our time exploring the area and climbing up to rock cut tombs which have been carved out of the cliff face. We gladly ended the excursion with a swim in the Mediterranean. When Ben(our professor) isn't piling on the work, we've been making time for soccer games in the parking lot, wine-tasting, backgammon tournaments, Turkish baths, belly dancers, doner kepaps, baklava, the occasional shoe-shine, philosophical talks with our guide Gerskel, and playing with Ben's 9-month-old son, Alexander.
