Flag of India  , Kerala,
Friday, January 23, 2009

Hi there everyone,
sorry its been a while since the last entry but we've had various things to sort out and its all been a bit hectic and stressfull. So basically we arrived down in Kerala yesterday (21/01) and found somewhere to stay; a nice little guesthouse 2 minutes walk from the beach, for only Rs.200 (about GBP 2.90) for each of us per night. So we'll stay here for another 2 nights and then its on to Madurai.
.
More about Alleppey though, its pretty much 'a slice of venice in India' as lonely planet describes it, and so its a town built around two main waterways and then lots of little canals and rivers. There is a famous attraction in Kerala which some of you may have heard of called the 'Kerala Backwaters'. They're basically a 900km network of rivers and lagoons and you can take boat trips or house boat cruises which last however long you want, generally a minimum of 5 hours and you go around all the little villages on the riverbanks, exploring and whatnot, so I think we're planning to do that tomorrow, all being well.
.
By the time we arrived here, neither Brownie nor I had washed any of our clothes for over a week (thats not to say we were still wearing the dirty clothes.....no..no........we had some clean ones left, well I did, brownie was down to one pair of boxers.... but anyway we decided that the time had come to find a means of removing all the grime, so we spent about an hour walking around in the dark trying to find a house that had a washing machine, but of course this was an enormously optimistic endeavour..luckily the genius, namely brownie, spotted washing powder and some string in a street stall, and so we bought some and wandered home. I'll never leave home without a washing machine again...it was a MISSION...using cold water that smelt heavily of egg (we later deduced that this was sulphur) and three large buckets..we slaved away after we'd had dinner, and used the string we'd bought as a makeshift washing line...of course the clothes were still soaking this morning, and so one of the hosts kindly hung them on a wall outside for the day. I can't say that they're much cleaner though...
.
We spent the day today basically sorting out our travel arrangements for the rest of our time in india, and in the process came across an arrogant french woman and a kilogram of lemons, with which we're trying to blonden our hairizons...yes hahaha...Brownie also insisted that we buy fake tatoos of naked ladies sitting on rockets, and so we did, and we put them on, and then they fell off immediately...great balance they had.
.
So we're heading east on the 25th to meet up with Lewis in Madurai, and then getting another train to Chennai, where we'll stay for a couple of nights, again with Lewis, and then we had to work out how to get up to Varanasi, WAY further up north, and we came to the conclusion that because we have to leave on the 6th Feb, and that because there are only 2 trains each week from Chennai to Varanassi, that we're going to fly there on the 29th. We'll then spend a couple of days there, bop over to Agra, and then somehow find our way to Delhi in time for the 6th...it all sounds a bit unorganised, but everything up to Agra is booked, so we're sorted until then...
Okey dokey, well thats about all from us, and providing we get onto the backwaters tomorrow and that i dont drop my camera into them, there should hopefully be some more photos up on here before too long!
Until next time...Brownie, Max and Shoe =) x

Clothes
Hi Guys,

Washing clothes in buckets is a step too far!
I'd be shopping in the local market for new clothes.
Hope travel timetable works out over next few days.

Have fun.

clean clothes???
Who needs then when you can wash in the sea and everyone else smells 'interesting' anyway. You're probably the two most fragrant creatures that hit India for a while - enjoy not bathe-ing - and that's not a typo! I'm really enjoying these posts but am wondering if Brownie can type! Happy travels, you two. PP
