1st: the town, like our guidebook said, has a very gritty charm to it. It reminds you constantly that while beautiful, this is still a 3rd world country. Yet, at the same time, Puerto Viejo is just full of the most amazing sights, sounds, and tastes. The people are overwhelmingly friendly, and despite their monetary hardships, seem to just really love life.
2nd: the town is not for everyone. We've heard of a lot of people moving to Costa Rica from the United States, and while we can understand to a degree why that is....it is perfectly acceptable to say that you should not move if you want to have all the creature comforts of the U.S. in your home.
3rd: best beaches. Really.
Finally, Jen and I both agree that we'll miss Puerto Viejo. It's not frequented much by tourists because most people go to the west coast of Costa Rica where all the resorts are located. We're not much into that scene, so we'll take the 'gritty charm' of this east coast hamlet.
Adios Puerto Viejo! Tomorrow, the Arenal Volcano!
