Crater Lake to Crescent City, CA

So I'll pick up from where I left off: big awful spiders. No wait, I’ll skip that memory.

We got underway early this morning with no clear idea of where we were going. We knew that on Friday we had a reservation for Redwood National Forest, so we had one day between now and then. We decided to get into California and find a cheap place to stay (we ruled out camping because of…well, ya know…those 8 legged things).

I suggested a roadside attraction to punctuate our drive. The place is called 'The Oregon Vortex’ & ‘House of Mystery.’ It was along our route to California and so we decided to make a short detour to go and see it. Online and in books it’s called, "A wonder" and “Unexplainable.” Here’s the abbreviated story: Gold miners back in the 1800’s built a small wooden structure in Oregon where they could measure out their findings. But, upon doing so they realized something odd…the gold did not weigh as much inside the house as it did outside of the house. Not only that, weird phenomena began to happen like people mysteriously swaying, growing or shrinking in height, etc.

So naturally we decided to see if this place was as cool as it sounds! The little wooden cabin (The House of Mystery) is truly out in the middle of nowhere. But, when we arrived it was apparent that we were not the only curious tourists! We jumped on a tour and were guided through some strange experiments. We were shown how standing on the opposite ends of a perfectly level board, a person’s height can change! Or, how in the House of Mystery a floor that seems to be pointing up hill, is actually the opposite. In many instances it seemed like we were being duped, that the whole thing was an optical illusion. BUT for every rebuff we had the tour guide presented credible evidence to the contrary. Maybe it was real, maybe it was fake….but it sure was fun.

Moving on from the Oregon Vortex we took highway 199 most of the way through the remainder of southwest Oregon into California. I forgot to fill my gas tank while still in Oregon, because as soon as we cross the state border the gas prices went up about 35 cents per gallon (CA has very high gas taxes). Oh well.

We found a cheap place to stay (obviously with w-fi!) and proceeded to explore the town a bit. The town of Crescent City, CA is a deserted cold beach resort. It looks about 20 years past its prime and the fact that it’s foggy almost constantly with a cold wind blowing off the Pacific Ocean doesn’t help attract beach goers! Speaking of beach goers..there were none. The beach is nearly all rock, and the water so cold that few would venture in.

So…after catching a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean (we felt like Lewis and Clark), we headed back into town and saw the new Harry Potter movie. It was good, although I forgot just how depressing that book was (and I don’t care, Snape is still the best character).

Tomorrow we head down to Redwood National Forest, about an hour and a half south of Crescent City along the coast. Probably no wireless there, but after that we’re in San Francisco for two days and will hopefully be able to update at that time.
