Where I stayed

Suffering a catastrophic hangover from the ferry crossing, I stumbled from spring-time, back into winter and stepped out into Helsinki/Helsingfors. There are some things that, when combined, make an awkward situation:

Hangover + Heavy backpack + Being lost + Not being able to read any signs = AAAaRRGHH!!!by7gcsuec/...;p[9!j,,!!8]#!!

Once I had my bearings (and some sleep to recover), I wandered around the centre of Helsinki. Well, tachnically I walked straight across it, I had heard it was quite a small capital city but I covered a lot of ground in an hour!

I had also been prewarned by two Finnish people beforehand (Pauliina and Ville, plus another randomer on the ferry) that people are pretty quiet here, but I did not expect this! So many people looked sad and only one person has spoken to me since I arrived!

Still, it's been good, I explored the cool buildings and shops in the centre of the city, looked around the Kansallismuseo and explored the island fortress of Suomenliina, or 'Sveaborg' in Swedish. It's a bit confusing, a lot of places and streets have different names in both Finnish and Swedish, yet when explaining in English, the Finnish word is used... hmmm...

I definitely enjoed Helsinki, though my one regret was that I missed the opening hours for the Temppeliauko on several occasions. It's this impressive looking church carved into the rock, only got to see it from the outside in the end but the interior is supposed to be really cool!

Spent today taking a long distance train up to Rovaniemi (7:30am - 5:00pm), but got to see lots of foresty countryside on the way up. It is snowing here and man, there is a lot of it already settled. Who would have thought that the arctic would be so cold?

Tomorrow I will explore around Rovaniemi and will also unleash the kid inside me and pay Santa a visit (he's only up the road after all). Let's hope my terrible, terrible attempts at speaking Finnish get better in the nextr few days!

Moi moi!
