The rice fields of Longsheng Dazhai
Entry 194 of 323 | show all | print this entry |
The next morning we rose to a wonderful Chinese breakfats of noodles and eggs and tomatoes. From there we set out on a trek to Ping an along the rice paddies. Along the wya we had many of the locals offer us guidance to show us the way, or invite us in for food, but we figured we could find the way, and the breakfast was enough to keep us full for hours. One man, walking with his wife and his little dog, saw we were trying to get the dogs attention. When it ignored us, he showed us that we should whistle. We did and immediately the puppy started to wag his tail and ran over to us. The man offered that we could keep the dog! That should be easy to declare at customs. "What do you have to declare?" "Some souveniers, some copy cd's and a puppy."
the scenery truely was amazin. Some of the most beautiful things we have ever seen. Teh teraces are so carefully built on the sides of the mountains, flooded with chanels, and then planted with rice that was growing in these makeshift green houses from early April. the shades of green, combined with the sky reflecting of the water in the terraces and the people working the fields was incredible. We walked for about 2.5 hours and stopped on a hil just above Ping' an. It looked very similar to another town we passed along the way, and was quite a way down hill, and knowing that we have at least 3 hours of walking to get home we decided to rest there and then head back. The walk back was just as beautiful, if not more so, as we noticed more and more of the details. The buildings in these towns are very large wodden barracks. Huge families live here. All sons live in the family house with their parents and brothers. Sisters move out to live with their husbands. The lowest floor has the animals. Next up is the main family are for eating and cooking. The third floor has the sleeping rooms. During the day, grandparents mind the kids while parents are out in teh fields or out guiding the few tourists that are here. In over 8 months, we have not been to a more peaceful place yet. We loved it here.
