The beautiful day
Entry 47 of 323 | show all | print this entry |
The third day was supposed to be the most beautiful part of our trip. It goes along the original Inka trail (the other 2 days it was a refurbished path done not that long ago). It takes us over very high escarpments with beautiful views, and through three important Inca ruin sites. Unfortunately we are here during rainy season, and this was the worst weather day for us. It did not rain all day, but the clouds did not let up at all and we did not enjoy the promised ciews. We did go to see three sets of ruins, but Freddy our guide, who was really super nice, did not quite have the as much information as we would like, so we were not quite satisfied with his descriptionsof the ruins (´This was ceremonial place, or somewhere for Inca Princes to stay´ was the standard explanation with no real details into much of anything). The last part of the day included another steep decent which allowed me to practice my running down stairs. Quite complimentary was during one section one Malwina and Lilly our guide both stopped below me and stepped out of the way (as they would for a porter) only to surprisingly exclaim ´Oh, its you, we thought it was a porter´. We arrived at base camp where showers and a restaurant have been put together for the last stretch. We passed on the showers, but our whole group had dinner served in the restaurant (still made by Raul and his band of porters) and it was even better than before. We even had to take some pics. The next was to be extra tough. Wake up before 4 to get to the sun gate to catch the sunrise and our first view of Machu Picchiu and then decend to Machu Picchiu. We went to sleep extra early to make sure we got our rest. This proved to be the worst night of all. The previous nights were cold (around 0 degrees), and it rained, but we managed to stay dry and mostly warm. This night even our tent leaked and we got wet, plus our tent was right beside Sara and Brian´s and they were very cold and very wet and did not sleep much and were very loud about it. We could not have slept more than 4 hours.
