Entry 15 of 323 | show all | print this entry

After talking to other travelers we discovered that when passing the Brazilian boarder we did not get stopped, and did not get a stamp or an entry card.
The only way to find out what to do next is to go to a Federal Polica office. So at 9am we walked into the Police station, and after 2 hours of filling out documents, and finding out the procedures, we were informed that we (really screwed) up and have to pay a fine of $R165.55 each which is $85 usd each. However in order to get the right stamp we had to go back to the boarder (20 hrs each way by bus and $50usd each, each way). One of the documents we had to sign was that we will leave Brazil in 3 days or get deported.
We went back to the hotel very discouraged. We were very close to packing up and saying good bye to Brazil for good and taking off to Peru.
However we decided to give Brazil another chance (and this way not loose more money on the jungle boat to Belem which we already paid for). We got a safety box, left all the big and heavy things, went to the bank and after 2.5hr in the line up paid our fines. Then we got a 12hr bus to Boa Vista, then another one 3hr to the border. At the border it took us almost 2 hours to explain what happened, we got a stamp out of Brazil, and then another few to get in.
Then we caught a 2.5 hr taxi which was only $2.5 usd more then a bus to Boa Vista and another 12 hr long bus to Manaus.
And here we go again. We did some shopping for the boat this morning: playing cards, sweets, cola+%, fruits, and now we are waiting for our boat which will be ready around 2:00.
I think that we learned our lesson and from now on we ask for as many stamps as possible on every border. What a story to tell
