Caracas day 2
Entry 5 of 323 | show all | print this entry |
Got up at 9 with a knock from a cleaning lady. Decided to stay another day and night, and see Caracas by day. Went out on the town for some breakfast. Steps outside of the hotel is Place Bolivar. He is seen as a saviour here as he lead the revolution and every town with more than 10 people has at least one Place Bolivar. Walked around and decided to try a street vendor for some breaky. We had a Grande Combo which included 2 pieces of fried pastry with some stuff inside and some fresh squeezed OJ. Amusing start to the day as apparently there are two choices of guck in the pastry but we did know that. It took the little lady quacking like a chicken to figure that out and we went for the chicken Combo. Muy Bien! So good we had another. The damage for this super breakfast: 3,000 Bs total (about $1.50 cdn). We spent the rest of the morning walking around town. For a country with a really bad economy, these folks love to shop. Imagine dropping the St Lawrence Market on every corner and the entire length of every street Down Town Toronto. Really cool site. Everyone is really nicely dressed. Business or casual we certainly do not look like rich tourists. If anything we are underdressed. I gotta get some nice shoes. ¨) The most interesting thing is the Venezuelan Phone Booth. Little Old lady sitting by a patio table with an umbrella. She has a bunch of cell phones tied to the table and sells individual cigarettes. So you walk up, pay for a 5 minute call and get a smoke. Service with a smile in Caracas. Lunch was a very excellent Italian restaurant for some Spaghetti and pasta with ¨chicken¨. another 15,000 Bs. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the main parts of Caracas, seeing old churches, more markets, enjoyed a great coffee for 1500Bs and found this Internet Caffee for 1500 per hour. There is no access to USB so we cannot upload pics. That will have to wait. Tomorrow we are off to Maracay and Puerto Columbia
Another point of interest is traffic. Traffic lights are only guidelines. Few people actually stop at the red lights, especially not the Taxi mopeds. How rusting you must be to take a little moped as a cab. The driver has a helmet, but none for the passenger as he weaves in and out of traffic running through red, amber and green lights as if they were not there.
It is rainy season down here and the clouds roll in in the afternoon with some scattered showers. it is not too hot or too humid. Caracas is settled in a valley between gorgeous flush green mountains. Views really are spectacular (when you can see over the clouds).
For dinner we went to a restaurant called Fregata (missing you guys) had some beers, fries, and fried pastreis with queso (cheese).
Adios

Chyba macie duzo radochy. Juz Wam zazdroszcze i ciesze sie z Wami.
P.S. Taxi do hotelu nie powinna kosztowac 30 razy tyle co breakfast for two. Pewnie wszyscy taksowkarze swiata lubia naciagac turystow. Mysle, ze wkrotce bedziecie ekspertami w negocjowaniu ceny w kazdym zakatku swiata.
PS2, What is the web site for the people doing the same route as you, but 6 weeks earlier?
