The Loop
I read in the Lonely Planet that there is a 3 - 4 day bike ride people have done from Thakek so I'm visiting purely for that. Took about 9 ours to bus it here. I spoke to a local Travel Lodge owner and he gave me a map. There is a book where previous travellers have written their loop experiences...sounds cool. Day 1 2 hours into my Loop tour my front tyre blew out doing about 60km/h. I nearly ate shit for sure. Some local dudes drove buy and gave me and my bike a lift to the mechanic. No problem. after 3 hours I had completed the proposed day 1 of the tour. I saw a bunch of caves, but I guess you're supposed to look for longer and have tea breaks....maybe ride slower I guess. Another 3 hours passed and I was having lunch at the proposed end of day 2. I rached the end of day 3 caves 3 hours after that but refused to pay $50US to get on a boat to see them. At this point I decided to attempt the Loop in 1 Day.
When night was upon me I wondered how wise it was to be crusing through the jungles Laos by myself at night with noone around. The bugs in the face were killing me and my eyes. I couldn't see anything through my sunnys....it was getting dangerous. I came a cross a local who told me about a guest house about 20k's away. I slept there for 7 hours on my way at 6am. The last 60k's was pissing rain. It sucked so bad, I was freezing, but I couldn't stop. I had to complete The Loop in record time. I got back to the lodge 23 hours 50 minutes after departure. I'd skip the loop if anyohne was considering. Nothing too special here. Wsa fun but, time to go north some more to Vientiane.
