..and some better weather, I would have spent a few days here. Not that there's an awful lot to the town itself, though it took me a while to figure that one out.

Not having any information about the place, and only visiting on the recommendation of people I had met along the way, I got slightly caught out by the sunday trap - turning up in a place to find it all but deserted and everything closed. It seems no matter how many times this happens to me, I will never learn! Even the tourist info was closed, which seemed remarkably inconsiderate of them. I can't be the only one who chooses to do something on a sunday, surely!

So with no idea exactly why I was visiting this town, I set about wandering the empty streets in an effort to discover just why I had been encouraged to visit. And didn't really find much. It was only when I strayed beyond the boundaries of the houses that I saw the appeal. Otepaa is a small hill-top town surrounded by an exceedingly pleasant nature reserve, with a couple of calm lakes not far distant. The walks around Apothecary's Hill alone deserved a couple of hours, which I was unfortunately unable to give as it soon began to rain, and rain hard.

Taking shelter until it passed, I then set about discovering the official attractions of the town, as determined by the information panel I had totally missed getting off the bus. The Lutheran church didn't do much for me, but the ruins of the original hilltop fort were interesting, insubstantial as they were. The location was well chosen - you could see for miles from the top.

Sleepy as the town was, there seemed to be plenty to occupy a couple of days simply walking around the area or relaxing by a lake. Maybe if I had been here in summer I would have lingered longer than anticipated.
