A short day trip out from Tirana (in theory - not so short if it takes you an hour and a half to find the 'bus station'), Kruja is a nice little town if nothing special. The main reason to visit is supposedly the castle, though after Berat it failed to impress. The other reason is the shopping.
The main road leading to the castle is very similar to the old town area of Mostar, in that it's an old cobbled street lined with bazaar style shops. The difference lies in what they sell. None of the mass produced rubbish here, just a very random selection of antiques and junk. If I had room in my bag, I so would have bought one of the old HMV gramaphones! As it was, I picked up a small rug. The area is supposedly famous for them, though probably only within Albania, but I had a few Leke left to burn, so why not? I even got to watch them making rugs. Every carpet shop had two or three women working on looms. Apparently it takes days to make a decent sized rug, which accounts for why they were so loath to bargain!
