As mentioned previously, I caught a 5 o'clock bus out of Saranda and got into Gjirokastra at about 6.30. A quick cup of coffee to wake me up - they just don't do tea here - and I was able to leave my bag at the cafe and explore town.

I wasn't all that taken with Gjirokastra. It was worth stopping here and looking around for a few hours, but nothing beyond that. Different to the rest of Albania that I had seen so far in that large portions of town weren't falling apart, the older parts of town (surrounded by a lot of ugly modern sprawl) were pleasant enough for a wander along the cobbled streets and looked impressive when viewed from above, their grey slated rooves blending into one big mass. There was an interesting variety of designs in the buildings, yet all the construction materials were similar, so the place had quite an oss feel to it. The castle might have been interesting had it been open at that time of the morning, but no luck there.

I didn't feel like I had missed much when I jumped on to my next bus at 10.
