Bypassing Zagreb - I had heard it was nothing special, and quite a distance out of the way - and unfortunately the Spvitlice national park as well - I didn't find out about it until I had gone way past - I arrived in Split after a loooong 10 hour, overnight bus journey. One of these days I will remember that I just can't sleep on overnight buses, and stop taking them.
On arrival at 6 in the morning, in a tired state I allowed myself to be dragged off to the first offer of a private room that came my way. Fortunately, it was quite a nice little place, in an old district and right in the middle of the few things to see in Split. Unfortunately, I didn't negotiate the price, and ended up paying way too much for the room. Live and learn.
There's only one thing that people come to Split to see, and that's what remains of Diocletian's Palace
Beyond that, there isn't much to Split. The peninsula that extends west from the palace has a few nice paths to walk along, and a nice little rocky beach on which to watch the sunset and ponder on the meaning of life (and what to have for dinner).

01 Diocletian's Palace
. There's not much left of the original structure beyond the walls and a couple of buildings inside, but instead lots of other structures have sprouted over the centuries, so that it's now a warren of little streets from different times in the city's history, and quite pleasing to walk through and discover all the little passageways that bring you out somewhere completely unexpected, much to the confusion of the people walking around that hadn't even noticed the alley from which you emerge. Fun.Beyond that, there isn't much to Split.
