The good thing about catching the early morning bus is that it gives you plenty of time to explore your next destination in the afternoon. The bad thing is you're the only one on the bus when it crosses the border, and the border guard decides to actually do his job for once. I've never been hauled off the bus and taken into a searching room before, and I was conjuring up all sorts of unpleasant scenarios as I was being led away. Fortunately, all that happened was he decided to give me a stern lecture about bringing drugs into the country. Apparently all travellers are thrown into the same "they're a long way from home and only have a backpack, they must be using drugs!!" category for this guy. I did tell him numerous times that i didn't have any drugs, but he still kept asking and telling me "if you have anything, put it on the table and it will go no further". All sounded a little bit suspect to me. Still, I had nothing to worry about, and ten minutes later I was back on the bus and heading for Pula.
Pula is a pleasant enough little town; an old Venetian settlement, there are many ruins from the first and second centuries about town, most notably the amphitheather (which I managed to get into for free, as someone left a back gate open :). Not much more to say about it, really. I wasn't that taken with the place, despite the fantastic Vege Club restaurant (my first decent meal since leaving Prague, as none of the hostels have had kitchens), so moved on a day earlier than i was intending. It didn't help that the hostel was quite a long way from town, and full of school groups. Bloody kids.
