My first day trip out from Koper (so it's not quite in chronological order, but I figured the map was messy enough already) was to the Postojna caves. I had intended to visit the Djevaca caves as well, but again I had problems with the irritating train scheduling around here. I was a little bit surprised to find that on turning up at the station at just after 8, I had to wait for almost two hours for the first train on the main route to Ljubljana. This meant that by the time I had got to Postojna and seen the caves, I had to wait another hour and a half before the next train returned towards the Djevaca caves, which wouldn't get me there until after the final entry. Irritating as hell as both caves are within an hour and a half's journey from Koper, so it should have easily been possible to visit them both in a day.
Okay, rant over (for now). At least the Postojna caves were worth the journey! The largest cave system in this part of the world, with about 21km of distance covered underground, the caves are crowded with the usual geological features you find in caves. Stalactites, stalgmites, that sort of thing. So I'm not a geologist! They were damned impressive, though, and the most famous column of the caves, the rather unimaginatively named 'Brilliant', did pretty much what it says on the tin. A shame I was forced into a huge group for the really rather unnecessary guided tour, as it meant that the walkways were very, very crowded at times, but it was the only way down into the caves, so I put up with it.
