Passing by the impressive Solkan bridge (with the longest stone arch in the world!), my next stop was Nova Gorica. Abandoning my bag with the helpful people at the tourist info centre, I had 3 hours to explore town before my train. Unfortunately, that was really about 2 hours more than I needed to see the place. There really didn't seem to be much there, besides some odd sculptures and the one thing I had come to see, the Novi Trg square.

To say Nova Gorica is on the border with Italy is slightly inaccurate. In fact, it's one town, with the border running right down the middle of the Novi Trg square, divided after WW2 and only reunited when Slovenia joined the EU in 2004. Although it's not really reunited as such, as it's still administered as two towns, the effect of it is it's one of the easier border crossings you can make - you simply get off the train in Slovenia, walk all of 10m and you're in Italy. So technically I've now been to Italy ;) Don't think I'll count this one, though.
