The last couple of days have been amazing!
On the 24th, after getting up fairly late (due to our get to know each other night-out!), me, I an and Dave did a bit of sightseeing. We ended up going on the Bangkok version of a speedboat(!) around the canals to the west of the city. It basically showed you what much of the housing is like for Thai's in Bangkok, and it isn't good. We also saw a woman selling things from her boat, which was incredible. There were kids playing in the water, and a lot of Buddhist temples line the banks which look amazing.
After that we went to the temple of Wat Arun. It's an amazing building which has been there for hundreds of years. I guess it's the Bangkok equivalent of St Pauls. It also gave great views of the whole city. If I remember correctly it is a Buddhist temple, which was dedicated to one of the previous kings.
After that we got a Tuk Tuk all the way back to Khosan Road. Going in a Tuk Tuk is a hair-raising but brilliant experience! It's also very cheap. They are like little motorised vehicles, that could just about squeeze all three of us in the back, and the drivers drive them as if they're motorbikes when they're more like cars! They let you see a lot of the city though, you just have to make sure you're not taken on a scam!
We then went out for a few drinks, met a couple of lads in a bar, one Irish one Swiss. We ended up playing pool with them and some Thai women. The Thai women are actually very good at pool, much better than the guys!
Then today we went to see the Grand Palace, the home of the King of Thailand. It is a huge area with lots of amazing buildings. As well as the palace itself there is also an armoury, museum and two throne rooms. The best building was part of the palace which houses the Emerald Buddha. It is only about 66cm tall but is on top of a huge golden platform in an amazingly decorated room. It is very sacred to the Buddhist people, and even has three different outfits depending on the season! We had to be careful not to point our feet at it as it is deeply disrespectful.
After that Ian and Dave had to go as they were catching the sleeper train from Bangkok to the south to visit the islands and attend the full moon party. So now it's just me again. I will probably leave Bangkok tomorrow and either head north to Chaing Mai or head west to Kanchanaburi and the bridge over the river Kwai, I haven't decided yet.
Anyway I will have to go as I have spent ages on here uploading photos. I think I messed it up so I attached them to the wrong entry, but nevermind at least they're on here! So take a look and let me know what you think. I'll try and update you in the next couple of days depending on what I do next!
Hope you're all ok, miss you all,
Chris x
