The most extraordinary thing happened yesterday, something that scared the crap out of me initially and then turned into a very memorable moment. Dani and I were on our way to lunch and as we walked out of the office, the day guard pointed to the sky and told us to look up. We both looked up and froze. The sun had an enormous halo around it and then a layer of rainbow. My first thought was that aliens were invading and then when I came to my senses, I thought maybe it was some crazy weather pattern. It was incredible! The photos don't quite capture the scope of it and I am having a hard time explaining the feeling. I've done some research and apparently the rings are caused by ice crystals within thin clouds. There are several different kinds of sun rings you can see depending on the weather conditions. One of the most common is called a 22 halo. They get this name because the ring is located 22 degrees away from the Sun. Both the Sun and the Moon block a 1/2 degree region of the sky at a time, so the ring around the sun is about 44 times larger than the Sun itself. If the same thing happens to the moon, it's called a Corona. I was happy to find out that you shouldn't look directly at the sun during a 22 halo because it can cause permanent eye damage. Too bad I found this out after I spent 10 minutes taking photos of it and staring straight at it! Warning, when you view the photos, make sure to do so with eye protection!

After the 22 halo, the rest of my day was quite insipid. With the shipment deadline tomorrow, we're working long hours and I've become the folding queen. Nothing really to be proud of at home but here I'm expecting to be hoisted up and carried around the streets pretty soon!  I've folded about 300 items and actually had a dream about folding a massive piece of fabric into a tiny plastic bag last night - how pathetic!
The last taxi from the station close to our office leaves at about 6pm, after that you have to take one taxi to the market for 30 pesewas, then another one home for 1 cedi. The market is absolutely rocking at night with hundreds of women selling fish, water sachets, clothing and anything you can fathom from the top of there heads. A lot of the time the women are not only carrying huge bowls of goods on their heads, but they have a baby in a sling on their backs. These babies ride on their mothers backs all day in the hot sun and I've yet to hear one cry! When the mothers get into taxis they keep the babies on their backs so if you're really lucky you get to sit beside one, and man oh man they are the cutest babies ever! I want to bring a few home with me - can I Nick? Anyone else want one? I haven't been able to get a great photo yet because the mothers are very protective, but I think if I offer them a United Way shirt, maybe it will work (thanks Judy!).

After our long day, Maria and I stopped to have a beer and 'the club' and then I indulged in a whole can of baked beans for dinner! Needless to say, my run this morning lasted all of 10 minutes until I had to rush home, I won't say anymore!

Tomorrow is our Chairman's staff party and I'm looking forward to checking out the moves of the young Ghanaians - I'll hold a workshop when I get back!

Sweet D on

The "cool dude" look like Morgan Freeman!
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
(my new favourite quote from "Invictus" starring Morgan Freeman)

The halo looks amazing! Don't look at the pictures too closely and ruin your eyes, Dad will get mad.

Just talking to you over email now :)

Love you!
