Irkutsk is the station from which we based our journey to Lake Baikal.

It was Krystyna's birthday here so we went out for dinner to a very good Uzbekistan restaurant near the Trud Stadium in town. The name of the restaurant? "Uzbekistan" how imaginative, food was excellent though.

Not a great deal to see in Irkutsk, the city is on the Angara river, the only one to flow out of Lake Baikal. There are some pretty churches but our real purpose for this stop was Lake Baikal and onwards to Ulan Ude and further.

We did have a wacky group of Dutch travellers in our hotel who were from a Volvo club and were driving all sorts of classic Volvos from Bant in Holland to Beijing, quite an adventure.
