I am standing on a hill overlooking Aquaba, Jordan, which was the city attacked by Lawrence of Arabia from the desert, when everyone thought that it was impossible. From her, I can see Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Eliat, Israel and of course Jordan. It is truly the crossroads of Arabia. The desert crossing went well, and took about four hours. I drove with the flow of traffic, about 130kms/hr (85mph). The hardest parts were 1) Getting out of Amman, because I do not read Arabic well at all, and 2) Not hitting any of the HUNDREDS of people who run out onto the highway as you are passing trying to hitch a ride. There were two army checkpoints along the way, and one more to enter Aquaba, but each time the face of my Canadian passport was enough to get me a smile and a wve through. There are still a lot of machine guns about though...
Tomorrow, Petra...
