from hanoi we booked a train ticket to the town of hiaphong.  no reason to really stay in this town, but we didn't know any better at the time.  the following day we booked a bus/boat/bus ticket where we arrived to cat ba island.  our timing was very good, and we were in town during a very slow period so we scored an ocean view room for $5 a night (altough prices hadn't been much different through vietnam, averaged paying $8/night for 2 people). 

we took a boat tour for a day to see the reason why so many tourists visit this area.  the bay consists of nearly 2000 islands.  most of them very dramatic to the eye (see the photos of ha long bay).  limestone peaks breaking the surface, qiuet bays, caves, and fishing villages, ha long bay was so so beautiful.  we took kayaks along with us and kayaked around some of the islands, and through a cave.  we lucked out and were the only ones on the boat (other than the 2 crew)...it was such a peaceful day.

2 nights on cat ba island and we headed back to hanoi.

Wow what a trip! I will have to check out this website more, haven't had a lot of time. Looks like you are having a wonderful time.
