So when I saw the sign that Bayfield was 76 miles out of our way, I hesitated...but Mara said "Let's Go!" I've always wanted to come here. I've heard of the quaintness of this little artsy harbor town and my passion for lighthouses and sailboats always piqued my curiosity about this place and the Apostle Islands which lie nearby. I had NO idea just how wonderful this stop would really be until the moon (almost full) rose over the water...big and almost red. Mara said it looked like a giant ripe peach. Our cute little "off-season" rate hotel is right on the pier front and we even have our own little covered deck, which I am typing this entry from now. There is something wondrous about that brief period of time when the moon rises and reaches just the right point in which it casts its beam of light over and across the water, in a triangular shape. I'm sure Doug knows just what I'm talking about, having sailed so much. It is magic.
We had a nice stroll down the pier before we ate dinner
The drive here was just like I remember..the first half was the route Mom and I always took to my Grandma DeLeo's house in Pengilly, MN. The girls and I stopped there today to visit Aunt Sandy, who now owns it and lives there with her five cats and her dog. We had a nice quick visit and off we went.
The girls are holding up well. I think I have the packing thing down better too. Tomorrow we will enter Michigan and cross the upper peninsula trying to reach Mackinaw where we will camp. Here's some photos of today's adventures. The big fish is "Willy" and lives in my hometown, Baudette, MN, which is the town on the Southeast side of Lake of the Woods, and it is the "Walleye Capitol of the World. " LOL.

. Many older folks and couples stopped to ask about the twins and Mara's ever-popular family tartan beret. Tomorrow we will get up and drive the Apostle Island shoreline drive. This area reminds me so much of Friday Harbor in the San Juans...even with the inland orchards I highly recommend this stop to anyone in this region. It's kind of romantic...definitely a nice honeymoon spot. The drive here was just like I remember..the first half was the route Mom and I always took to my Grandma DeLeo's house in Pengilly, MN. Bayfield
I have always wondered about Bayfield wondering if it was worth the drive to see it. Now I am certain it is on our travel list of places to see. It looks fantastic.
It was great seeing you at the wedding this week-end. I'm glad you had a good time and some time away from the duties of 'beingMom'. Kim said you and her had some fun at the dance.
Drive carefully and continue enjoying your trip!!

I forgot to sign the above message. Pollyanna 60 is Paulette. Fitting name for me huh? Do you remember the old movie called 'Pollyanna'. If not then you won't know why I use it. IT is also a movie that fits you very very well. It is very old but very enjoyable for you and the kids. Kind of sappy but still one of my favorites.
Paulette
Hi Paulette
YES!!! You should go there. I left with a tourist book of stuff to do. I will send it to you. Please try to get mom and dad there. I think they would love the ferry ride to Madeleine Island...also...The first white person there was a guy named Pierre LeSeur (familiar?)who was a french trader (Voyageur?), who set up a post. The Island was named after an Indian Princess, daughter of Ojibwa Chief White Crane, who married a latter white fur post commissioner with the last name of Codette(or something like that). Madeleine was the name she was christened with after she was married to this white Frenchman. Kinda cool. Mara and I are just loving the history!
Hayward is nearby!
Also, Hayward, WI where Ed and Abby moved all the boys from is only a half hour away!
Memories
Hi Girls,
Oh, how I love Bayfield. I took many a sailing trip out of there. We will be there in Oct. for Applefest which is awesome!! We stayed in Mackinac (same Super 8) on our way to Cape Cod last year!! I love that trip across Upper Michigan and now on to Niagara!! I am reliving my trip as we stopped in Niagara Falls too!! It is spectacular!! You are seeing some beautiful places!! I will be glad when you arrive in NY as I know you will be happy to see Doug (AKA' Daddy') I loved seeing all of you these past weekends...thanks for sharing all of this with us! Love You

I love the Great Lakes!
The more I re-visit the Great Lakes, the more I prefer them to the ocean. Horray for the Clean Water Act! Love that fresh air too.
