Short one here. I'm currently in Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat, India's so-called "foodie" state. You knew it had to happen!
I've only had a couple of meals but they've both been really quite good. Food here appears to be pretty expensive - up to four dollars for a meal! - but they've really got the art of the thali down to a science here. For lunch I ate in a place where they constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, pass to refresh your plate. Each person has a different one of the 12 or so things on there so it's pretty constant. But so good!
As the Lonely Planet says, there really are a lot more sweet curries here. That makes up for the fact that there are very few sweet shops, more quasi-Western-style bakeries, with cookies and cakes. I tried to find some barfi last night and walked forEVER.
I've attached some pics - if anyone can name the fruit in there with the custard apple, I owe you one. I heard someone call them "raspberries" but they're nothing of the sort. They're more like cherry tomatoes in texture and size but sweet. I can't get enough of them! Plus, discovering that custard apples are in season was a minor epiphany! I bought three very ripe ones and ate them all in a 16-hour period. That's a lot of custard apple!
