Its all a far cry from east coast Malaysia. Also noticeable is how much more Chinese it is, and how English rather than Malay is the common language. Fewer muslims so places open on Friday and they have beer!!!!
We weren't expecting any kind of night life here (especially on a wednesday night) but after a delicious 1 pound meal at the food court, we came across a string of Karaoke bars and then a well busy place, "Pure." Being happy hour, we thought it'd be rude not to enter, so we did
Fun night:- Only one other westerner there, a few Indians, but mostly Chinese. Pretty plush, upstairs a band sang covers of artists such as Mariah Carey, Robbie, Shakira and Guns and Roses, great entertainment (especially the one westerner (Swiss) headbanging on his own at the front!!)
Downstairs was a DJ much like a wedding disco. Bon Jovi is especially popular here!! Found out that we were in the busiest place to go on a Wednesday night. A great find, and proof that guidebooks can be rubbish....
Melaka is a very old town, used to be a very important port - governed by the Portuguese (amongst others) had a few similarities to Macau. Went to a few museums, learnt about the history, kite crafts, tribe people and such like. In one I had an urgent poo need. Loo roll was not to be found. Resorted to a bit of packing foam, and some A4 paper I had at hand. Lovely.
Spent final evening in the shopping centre again.... Went bowling. Rat won.
The different ethnic groups seem to specialise in jobs here... McDonalds in staffed by Muslim women (who offer free coke refills, brill!), glass collectors are Indian men, bar staff, DJs and public speakers are Chinese, and cigarette sellers are inevitably Chinese girls in ludicrously short white skirts. I was tempted to take up smoking!!!!
