Where I stayed
We had pre-booked dive course and B&B here for about 140 quid, staying in the 2nd best place on the island. Still cold water though!
The island is only 4km long, we walked across it in 10 minutes in order to find somewhere cheaper to stay when our package ended, however everywhere was booked out - This place suffers from a real shortage of places to stay, way different from the likes of Ko Phagnan. Walk was cool cos it was along a jungle track, we saw a massive lizard lying on some rubbish..
Spent the afternoon studyinf for our dive course, then went sea kayaking. On the way back we started to sink and shortly after we capsized. We were warned about the "small" hole in the boat - upon inspection (when we finally dragged the kayak out the water) it wasn't that small a hole!!
Rest of stay centred around diving, no beer on this beach, so many early nights!
Open Water Course Day 1 - Mental at first I didnt think I'd be able to do it, so out of control! Rat had goggle trouble and had to resurface immediately! Soon got used to it though, and with only 3 in our group we get things done quite quickly. Even in our first confined dive we saw some big ol' Lumphead Parrotfish - wicked! My fin pivots werent great - I tended to float away....
OWC Day 2 - More classroom, then our first open water dive!!!! Had to do a backward roll of the boat, which was easy. Then we just swam around for 45 mins - Magical! Saw loads of fish and a turtle.. A massive triggerfish (more aggressive than sharks apparently) swam nearby.... In afternoon more shallow stuff in which I lost a fin strap and rat lost his weights
OWC Day 3 - Saw blue spotted rays and did a few skills including swimming through a hoop. Then exam time... I got 92% and Rat 94% - Didn't he do well!!
OWC Day 4 - FINAL DIVE!! Went to the "Temple of the Sea", a small rocky island. It was phenomanal, so many fish as soon as we got out the boat. Visibility was fantastic, it was like swimming around an aquarium. By far our best dive thus far. Big schools of snapper, batfish, giant pufferfish (look like Jim!), bannerfish, boxfish, all in a multitude of shapes, sizes, colours and patterns. Once again there was a menacing looking triggerfish... Went down to 18m where we saw bamboo sharks kipping under rocks and some moray eels. A great finale to our dive course - and now we are both qualified divers - yay!!
Walked to long beach again, saw loads of lizards - It's really cool, walking around then you hear a noise, look down and theres a massive reptile at your feet! They soon scurry away though - I have many photos of tails!! A million times better than a reptile house.
Most friendly place we've stayed so far, the receptionists were great. Shame it was so pricey!
