Guten tag!! or Guten Morgen depending on what time it is for you. So guess what country I'm in now....Germany!!!
My former roommate from Guilford, Sally Stevens, invited me to come and stay with her in the lovely home that she has made for herself here. Her boyfriend Josh got transferred to a military base here so they moved last year to a city called Kaiserslautern in southwest Germany. This has been a very good trip for me for several reasons. The first is that it's great fun for me to see how my roommate is living in Germany, she's doing a nice job of learning German and learning about where she lives, she's made her own community of friends here.
Also, everyone in the states has a mixed up family tree that stretches to all kinds of different places, I know that mine comes mostly from Germany, so everywhere I go here I'm inspecting people, looking for my features and physical similarities. Kind of adds an extra component to people watching. The third reason that I am very glad that I came is that I am getting a glimpse on a part of American culture that I happen to be very prejudice against and don't understand too much. The military. On the base here it's like a little America. They use dollars and have a grocery store with all American products, everyone speaks English...it's very interesting. It's been very eye opening for me though..the majority of the people here have very normal jobs that I could certainly picture myself doing, and everyone I've met has been very kind and well, normal...certainly not the human killing machines I'd had set in my mind. It seems that my stereotypes have been unfair. or at least that I'm having to reanalyze my opinions, I can see a lot more grey to the situation. very good.
At this moment we are about to pack up the car and take a road trip to Amsterdam (it's only 5 hours away from here)!! Very exciting, going to the city of sin(and architecture of course) with my old roomie!! More thumbnails ...
