team fennocanada scattered for a few days, first with erika going to venice, then mike and kurt "went to a sweet hotel on the coast". i had 2 days after my last event before our flight, so i headed south 3 hours by train to la spezzia and the cinque terra, 5 little villages within a national park on the west coast of northern italy. one of the best decisions i have made in a long time, it was exactly the break i needed (the olympics and torino was fun, exciting, exhilerating, but definitely not relaxing!). i stayed in a hotel in corniglia with a big glorious non-vehicular bed and a shower (my first in a week that was not a sink in a fast food pizza restaurant) which was wonderful once i got the hot water working the morning AFTER having a desperate first ~cold~ shower the night before, and an amazing view of the ocean. i walked among the various villages, ate a yummy pesto dinner in vernazza, wrote a lot, sat on a stone wall for an hour and a half with the sun warming my back overlooking the ocean and terraced gardens listening to birds sing and waves crash and watching the sun on the water and cats prowl around cherry trees. i ate the best foccaccia of my life in riomaggiore and finally found a gelato place that was open as i waited for my train back to torino, where we all reunited and watched the closing ceremonies in the medals piazza.
